Do Buddihists use the practice of Om or Aum in meditation?

November 2nd, 2009 · 5 Comments

Sonia asked:

I read Hindu use this but I was wondering if Buddhist do. I have just begun research on buddhism. And have much to learn. If someone knows more about either subject (buddhist or meditation) I would love to know.

    meditation

Start with canonical buddhism before venturing off in the new age and mystic varieties.

This is not a bad introduction:

There are many types of meditation, but the primary purpose of Buddhist meditation is to develop quiescence of mind, thereby enhancing the quality of the attention.

The cultivation of awareness without thought allows one the ability to monitor their mental phenomena instead of identifying with it.

Say someone gives me a really cheap gift. The average person will think, “Man, this is such a piece of crap–why would they give me a piece of trash . . .” They will be grouchy and annoyed.

A luckier person will think, “Even though this sure is a piece of junk, at least it was thoughtful.” They will be uplifted.

    A buddhist says, “Thanks.”

Traditions that recite mantras will use Om, for instance the mantra of compassion, Om mani padme hum.

    Meditation Books for Beginner

No we don’t, whether Theravada’s Samantha and Vipassana.

or Ch’an meditation or other Mahayana Insight and View meditations.

or Tantra’s Yoga, Mahamudra and Dzochen meditations, none use the Om.

Although Om is the beginning syllable for many of our Mantras.

    *********

    Edit.

Any one teaches you Om or Aum or whatever in meditation is not Buddhist or Taoist traditions; may be they are copy cat Buddhist Meditations?

Of all the meditation techniques I have learned from the retreat centers, I was never taught to use either.

Mantra chanting on the other hand is not a meditation technique.

    Brain Wave

No om or aum is in orthodox Buddhist practice.

The mediation mechanism is well explained in the ‘China Falun Gong’ book. The effects and advantages are discussed in details in the Zhuan Falun Lecture. Both books and meditation demonstration video are free to download from the URL listed below. If you need any help, contact a local practitioner in your area for free instructions.

Falun Gong was found in 1992 by Master Li Hongzhi in China. About 100 million followers like the practice in over 80 countries worldwide. Falun Gong is an ancient practice for the body, mind, and spirit based upon the universal principles of Truthfulness, Compassion, and Tolerance. Falun Gong consists of five sets of powerful exercises.

Falun Gong, Tibetans, other Buddhists, and Daoists have been persecuted in China. The most offensive human right violation is the organ harvesting from the Falun Gong practitioners in China. Can you kindly sign a petition to stop persecution of Falun Gong practitioners in China, please ?
