there’s no set time. it can be different from person to person depending on how your mind works.

Buy some books on the subject or take some classes. The more you understand about meditation, the easier it gets.

Meditation is not something that can be achieved, rather it is a process. The more you practise it, the more aware you will become of yourself and the world around you. After you have practised daily for a certain period of time, you will get a new attitude as your awareness increases. This new attitude will be that you see why it’s important to meditate and then you will want to make it a part of each day, just like you brush your teeth each morning to stave off caries.

You will want to meditate each day to reduce the tension of the personality and with this tension all the problems that are brought upon oneself by a lack of awareness. The more you practise the happier your life will be, the healthier you will be, the more compassionate you will be and correspondingly the less problems you will have.

Wanting to achieve a result in a set time period is an obstacle to get started. To overcome this desire, just do the practise each day for a set amount of time. It usually takes at least 3 weeks before anything becomes a habit and then you make an about face and will be naturally drawn to making it a part of your daily life.
